Ruby Dee, born October 27, 1924 is an actor, playwright, poet, and activist, among other titles. Her work in countless theatrical, film, and television productions have led to her being awarded the National Medal of Arts and a Kennedy Center Award. Ruby Dee was raised in Harlem, attended Hunter College High School and graduated from Hunter College with a degree in Spanish and French.
In 1971 Dee won the Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award for her work in Boesman and Lena. In 1973, she won another Drama Desk Award for her work in Wedding Band. 
Before she was known for her work on film and television, she appeared in countless Broadway productions. Her credits include the following:
